The couple have what is known as “kinship” with Asa, as the birth mother is a blood relative of Robin Adams. Though he has begun talking, and has a vocabulary of about 25 words, he is not autistic, which Adams said the couple are thankful for. “They surmise many of his problems are constant and due to unfettered heroin exposure during his entire time in utero,” Adams said. Now Asa has four therapy sessions per week including music, developmental, occupational and speech. Over the last three years, Clark said, the number of infants being born with NAS has tripled.
